【GSP】英語プレゼンテーションのプロによる特別授業を実施
１０月２７日（金）、「２１世紀（高２文系選択科目）」の授業で外部より講師（吉野周氏）をお招きして、以下のテーマで特別授業（使用言語：英語）を実施しました。
「グローバルビジネスに必要な資質」
「国際舞台での英語プレゼンテーションの極意」
株式会社セイコーホールディングスでブランド推進部参事を経験された吉野氏ですが、計６年間（仏・豪）にわたる海外駐在歴と１５年間に及ぶスイスでの国際展示会でのプレゼンテーション（毎年実施）経験を活かし、英語プレゼンテーションに関する著書も３冊上梓されています。今回は、グローバル人材としての要諦を本校２１世紀履修生たちと共有して頂くと同時に、英語プレゼンテーションの秘訣も教えて頂きました。何事においても「好奇心を大切に」とのメッセージが非常に印象的でした。
現在生徒達は、Google Sitesを活用した米国高校生との共同学習に向けてプレゼンテーション用のウェブサイトを作成中です。今回学んだ「英語プレゼンテーションの極意」を上手く生かしてくれることを期待しています。
以下、今回ファシリテーターを務めた本校ネイティブ教師による授業内容報告です。
A career in international business is one likely option for many of Meiho's Global Studies Program (GSP) students. On October 27th, such students welcomed veteran Japanese businessman Mr. Shu Yoshino to their class to discuss such a career path and the art of giving presentations.
Mr. Yoshino, who has a long career with Seiko Holdings Corporation, is a multilingual Japanese businessman having mastered English, French, and now working on German. His work at Seiko has sent him to over 30 countries, including long-term stays in Paris and Sydney. His most important work was representing Seiko at Basel world Watch and Jewelry Show, the largest trade show in the world for watch and jewelry companies.
For 15 years, Mr. Yoshino was a regular at this trade show, giving press conferences to announce Seiko's new products. It was during this time that he honed his presentation skills, becoming an expert on the subject. (He currently has a series of e-books on the topic: 英語プレゼンの極意、５日で覚えるプレゼン英語、英語プレゼン表現集.)
After an open discussion during which Meiho students asked about language learning, working abroad, and difficulties in collaborating with people from other cultures, Mr. Yoshino gave one of his signature presentations. Afterward, he shared a set of tips for creating successful presentations. Among these tips were the importance of knowing your audience, stating the conclusion up front, and the need to keep the message (and PowerPoint slides) simple and focused. (As the students are currently making online presentations as part of their coursework for 21st Century A, they will be able to refer to these tips for their own work.)
Near the end of the class, Mr. Yoshino gave some advice based on his 30-plus years of experience. The advice was that if you truly want to be a successful international businessman, there are two things you must foster. The first is the ability to adapt to different situations. The second is one's curiosity. Adaptability and curiosity can be a businessperson's greatest assets and lead to a long and productive career.
As a teacher, watching the expressions on the faces of the students as they actively engaged with Mr. Yoshino in discussion left me with the impression that Mr. Yoshino's experience and wisdom will have a huge impact on future generations of Japanese businessmen and women. We owe him a debt of gratitude for graciously making a visit to our humble little class. Thanks for your time, good Sir!
