Visit by ONHS! Finishing up the term in style...

Meiho's 21st Century students finished up the first term with a visit from the Peace Club of Otsuma-Nakano Senior High School (ONHS). The day's festivities included a casual icebreaker, an engaging discussion, and a thought-provoking presentation.

Since May, Meiho's 21st Century students, many of them having returned from their GSP term study abroad earlier this year, have been learning about, discussing, and debating Universal Basic Income. This is a modern-day movement that seeks to improve societies by ensuring that every citizen has access to enough cash to meet their basic needs. After a whole-group brainstorm in which students from both schools provided key vocabulary and ideas, smaller groups engaged in lively discussion of the topic, touching on issues such as taxes, poverty, employment, and crime rates.

When time was up, students from each group summarized and presented the content of their discussions. It was exciting to see how each group focused on different aspects of the issue, with one focusing on pros and cons, another on employment issues, another on citizens' motivation to work, and the other on financial costs and taxes. As both schools are sending debate teams to this year's NFLJ Japan National Tournament at iCLA, this discussion further served to prepare students for success at that event this summer.

Next up was ONHS's Peace Club's presentation on peace. They started by asking, "What is peace?" From there, ONHS students expressed that although it is hard to answer this question, we can still make strides in forming a more peaceful world if we examine the causes of conflict and war. Their main argument was that it is important to establish a more just and fair system of managing natural resources. This is because many conflicts and wars throughout history can be traced back to such resources as oil, diamonds, and land. They concluded by proposing that a third-party system be set up to help resolve issues between developed countries and developing or third-world countries who are competing for the same natural resources.

The presentation was followed with a Q and A session. Meiho students asked about the particular natural resources that have caused the most conflict. They were also curious to learn more about the proposed third-party system. ONHS students eagerly answered these and other questions and helped further understanding of their ideas.

For Meiho's 21st Century students (and teachers!), it was truly a blessing to have such a wonderful and engaging interaction with our peers from ONHS's Peace Club. We hope that our visitors enjoyed the event as much as we did. See you around, ladies (and Mr. Vickers)!
