【授業報告】アカデミック英語の授業でアメリカの大学授業をミニ体験

 高2・3文系生徒対象の選択授業「アカデミック英語」は、10年後、アジアでグローバルリーダーとして活躍する人財を育てるための本校独自の科目です(2013年度より「21世紀」に改称)。アメリカの大学授業を想定したゼミ形式(対話型)の少人数授業で、英語でグローバル政治・経済情勢を議論し、同時に効果的なエッセイの書き方やプレゼンテーションの方法を学びます。その際、マインドマップ技法やICTをフル活用し、クリエイティブな思考を技化する訓練も行います。高3時には、東大の要約問題や一橋大の英作文問題をはじめとした難関大学入試問題演習も行われます。もちろん、授業は全て英語で行われるイマージョン方式です。

 *ターム留学からの帰国生がクラスの半数を占めています。

Preparing for Academic Prowess & Global Participation
Today's Japanese students have two needs when it comes to English education: passing university entrance examinations and using English in the job market. Furthermore、 a global perspective and awareness of Japan's role in the world is a necessity. Meiho's two year (H2 and H3) Academic English program is specifically designed to meet these needs.

Learning through English and an English only classroom. Students here are not passive language learners as much as they are active class participants. Courses feature a western-style seminar approach、 one in which students participate in discussions and work in groups to engage in problem solving.


Newspapers & online news broadcasts (H2 & H3)

Gaining a global perspective and strengthening vocabulary and listening skills through IT.
During the first hour of these courses、 we focus on corpus-based vocabulary commonly found in newspapers. This is further supported through viewing online news broadcasts and reading online articles from international outlets.


Debate & Discussion (H2)

Building confidence to convey opinions and concerns in English.
In the second hour of class、 students learn how to debate and discuss issues in English. Topical knowledge and linguistic knowledge are both increased and supported through a balanced mixture of discussion、 reading、 writing、 and online sources.


University entrance examination preparation (H3)

Tackling the most difficult university entrance exams.
In the second hour of class、 we tackle the most difficult university examinations. Both topical and linguistic knowledge are increased through discussions、 readings、 and working on actual past examinations. Student ability to comprehend and answer long and dense reading passages found in university exams is our focus.
